Back after playing another game..
Well, just over two months ago, after a fraction under three years of playing Guild Wars almost exclusively, I decided that I had had enough.
Age of Conan had received great reviews, so I went off and bought the collector's edition.
Two months later all I can say is "What a waste of time and money!" LOL
The huge problems that AoC has, has only reminded me what an absolutely great and complete game Guild Wars is!
On its release it was pretty much perfect.
Compare this to AoC which is so full of bugs that Rentokill would run away in horror.
The best things though are the incredibly good patching engine of Guild Wars - no 5 hours+ of server downtime once or twice a week, and of course no monthly fees.
Taking my two month break cost me about £75, for the game and two months subscription fees. I should have just stayed grinding my titles :-)
I taught me a lesson though. The grass is not always greener on the other side.

So AoC sucked. A lot of people saw this coming. To be honest, I wouldn't be surprised if most games failed like this if they have to compete with WoW. GW2 will want to be FAR better than GW currently is if Anet want to even break even on costs.

I raged on Requiem:Bloodymare after a day of the game not being able to update itself!
I was like - WTF?!?!?!
Screw you - if this is what I get for free - I'd rather not play games!

Age of Conan was pretty promising, and there were a lot of features I did like about it that might be echoed in GW2 (full 3d environment allows a more realistic experience - though in AOC they screwed it up so you could swim up waterfalls, parts of the melee system like no click to move)
But in the end even apart from the bugs and lack of content and poorly designed pvp there are features of GW that I can't do without now. PvP toons, free skill changes (it costs an increasing amount of money every time you want to change your feats which are a huge part of your characters build), not having to grind in pve to pvp.
There are lots of problems with GW in terms of its skill and class development in the expansions and even some fundamental problems with the core classes in certain cases (necro energy management), but there are lots of things GW did well in PvE and PvP and in some sense the structure or foundation of the game is just incredible and will be difficult to match.
One thing I'll give to AOC was that it was a breath of fresh air for a while. It really felt like it was on the cutting edge and made GW feel old and dry. At the very least it made me hope that the developers can learn lessons from the failings of these other games and take the good aspects and improve on them for GW2 merging it with whats great about GW1.

indeed...
On a lighter side, people can complain about how poorly run Guildwars is all they want, but in retrospect it was planned pretty damn well technically speaking. I would be pissed if I wanted to sit down to play after working all week only to be greeted by weekly server maintenance.

know what you mean, i play a bit of Wow most nights and cant bring myself to do Battlegrounds, its just depressing how focus'd on gear it is, i just just Pve on wow unless i really see a nice weapon, arena doesnt seem that appealing either, not a fan of how some calsses are pretty imbalanced and normally have the talent tree so no real change

Age of Conan had the potential to be good, but poor design decisions make it a complete waste of time and money.
PvP is a joke, 1v1 in AoC is about as balanced as 1v1 in GW. While there's a new fugitive system, it doesn't change the fact that there are huge balance issues like several classes being able to one-shot softies. GW has real PvP, an average RA match will be more tactically interesting than any AoC encounter.
There's no real skill involved either, you mash your favourite buttons and things die, or you do. The combo system pretends to have depth, but in the end it just means you have to press extra buttons before you're allowed to use the skill. On the contrary, GW's skill system is brilliant, and it's hard to appreciate the genius behind it until you've played something like AoC.
I've never played a game with as many technical problems as AoC. Memory leaks, incompatibilities with common hardware, constant server instabilities and crashes, etc. just to name a few. Despite the recent MAT disaster, ANet run a very stable game compared to Funcom.
All in all, Funcom does seem dedicated to improving their game, and I would like to see AoC succeeding in the next few months, but I wouldn't be surprised if it went the completely opposite direction.

And in this heat, the grass is never going to be green again!
But in all seriousness, AoC is quickly becoming my perfect example of our nex-gen MMO's, where hype can't sustain things forever especially now that the initial "awe" of it has worn off.
I gave AoC props for one thing - They tried something a bit different and a bit more edgy. But once I got into it, as polished as things looked, it was also obvious that things were rushed and it really wasn't all that different from everything else. Clear bugs and glitches that should never have existed upon release. I certainly don't expect any game to be perfect, but even the client fiasco was something that should never have occured. Add that on to the crashes, memory issues, an "improved" pvp ganksystem using criminal status which seems ripped right out of Flyff...it wasn't long before I ditched that game. At least you lasted longer than I did.
If AoC had stayed in closed beta for a few more months it could have made a huge difference, but they just had to meet that release date. It's just one reason why I hope and pray Anet doesn't rush GW2 to meet an expected release date just to appease the severely impatient crowd.

People can't really talk about WH yet - the whole NDA thing, but so far it has really strong support. Don't lose faith
As for AoC, I too got it at release, and only paid for 1 month subscrip - it simply wasn't worth it. It starts off pretty unique, but then you realize there is simply no content past certain point that makes it "worth it." I've heard from lvl 80s that once you peak, there's pretty much nothing left to do - in fact, there's hardly any content to even get you to lvl 80. A very unfinished game, and bugged to hell.

GW is great, no doubt, but it is still coasting on the genius of Prophecies. Nothing since has come close to matching the brilliance of the original design. This is why we have come to expect nothing but the highest standards from ArenaNet, and this is why we are continually disappointed when they perform merely well.
